Students from three public elementary schools in Batangas took part in the training

TDRO’s Cris Banaag leads the Traffic Safety Awareness training activity for students of three public elementary schools in JGSPC’s host communities. More than 500 students participated in the community development activity organized by JGSPC.

To help raise awareness on road safety and avoid traffic incidents along major thoroughfares in its host communities, JG Summit Petrochemicals Group (JGSPG) organized a one-day Traffic Safety Awareness training session on September 13, 2019. Over 500 students from three public elementary schools in Barangays Simlong, Pinamucan Ibaba and Pinamucan Proper in Batangas City took part in the activity.

The City Government’s Transportation Development and Regulatory Office (TDRO) led the sessions, participated in by students in Grades 4 to 6 from the three schools. Among the key takeaways, participants were reminded to always wear seat belts whenever inside a moving vehicle; to stop, look, and listen before crossing streets; to always use the pedestrian lanes when crossing streets; and to use designated loading and unloading zones. Students also learned about basic traffic safety signs and symbols commonly encountered during their daily commutes.

According to TDRO, education is not the only factor that helps reduce road accidents. Awareness of their surroundings, discipline and strict compliance with traffic rules must also be observed by pedestrians to assure them of their safety.

Students of Pinamucan Ibaba and Pinamucan Proper elementary schools actively participate in the Traffic Safety Awareness discussion facilitated by Batangas City’s Transportation Development and Regulatory Office (TDRO).

For JGSPG, it hopes to instill into the young minds of the students that safety should always be a top priority, and that having a safety mindset and always being alert is important during their travels. To this end, JGSPG has tapped the local barangays over the years to help in the traffic management of chokepoint areas in its host communities.

Last March, JGSPC also organized a Fire Safety Awareness Summit attended by 750 participants from the same schools to enlighten students on fire hazards, fire safety procedures and how to conduct an emergency response efficiently in the event of a fire incident.

These safety awareness activities form part of JGSPC’s community development outreach efforts.
